[NewsFlix] Lee Choun Hwan's ink wash paintings were exhibited at 2021 PLAS Comtemporary Art Show.

Not only Lee’s early artworks of traditional ink wash painting but recent works including the series of 'The Mood of the Mountain' were displayed in the booth#B20 of the COEX exhibition hall. The varied tones of black ink stand out and deliver a sence of calm on Lee’s notable work 'The Sound of Nature' (2005) and a series of traditional ink wash paintings from 2000. Particularly, 'The Sea of Clouds at Bumbong' (2005) and 'The Breath of Nature' (2007), which depict the flow of the atmosphere and a superb view of mountains, were created by re-editing the memories of a specific place he went to. Lee's interest and affection toward nature were reflected on these.

While delicate brushstrokes express his inspiration from natural landscapes on these paintings, 'The Mood of the Mountain' series are created by new techniques resulting in simplified colors and forms. 'The mood of the Mountain#533' (2021), mountain at dawn, and 'The mood of the Mountain#535' (2021), mountain in Fall, are new paintings by a method using Korean paper to express texture.

Lee Choun Hwan started his career as Korean fine artist in his early twenties, and majoroity of his works were based on ink wash paintings. In addition to traditional ink wash paintings, he has also tried new styles by mixing materials and techniques of Western paintings and Korean paintings, and developed his uniqueness. Visitors had a chance to meet his diverse art works of 40 years journey through the art fair.

It was the second time that the artist introduced the ink painting series to the public, following BAMA 2021 show, Busan Anuual Market of Art held last month. He said “As we live in a rapidly changing era, we need space that nature brings. I hope that my work will play such a role to people.” He added, "I am happy to have an opportunity to communicate with the public by participating in a large-scale art fair."
