The reason why modern people are interested in golf is because they can walk around the wide green fields and calm down their tired bodies and minds.

However, modern people who do not have time to spare often spend their free time playing screen golf. In particular, there have been a series of programs newly published that allows to play screen golf at home, making public access to golf much easier.

Unfortunately, due to wide spreading of screen golf, many people are playing them in a poorly informed posture resulting in an imbalance in posture, leading to more patients complaining of pain. Therefore, I am conducting an interview with Sabin kim, the therapist of the Songdo RBT body posture correction & Pilatesthera.

Q. It is said that golf is one of the main ‘villain’ for ruining your body?

A. I like golf too, but I always pay attention to stretching before and after golf, regardless of its dullness.

Before the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics, when the medical coaches were given a short free time, the coaches who preferred golf used to comfort themselves by playing screen golf. Surprisingly, after playing golf, everyone gathered together, as if they had made a promise, to spend more time stretching and correcting their bad posture than the time they spent playing golf.

Because golf is a lateral sport, it is necessary to correct the imbalance of body posture. Without adequate compensation, there is a high risk of severe pain for a number of reasons, such as internal peristalsis and damage to trigeminal fibers.

That's why not only professional golfers, but also many amatuer golf lovers visit the center to learn about their body and exercises that suits their body type.

Q. What are the pains caused by golf?

A. The first muscle that I check with professional golfers is the pronator teres, a muscle that's attached to the lower arm of the elbow, which allows you to pronate your hand.

Golf players who visit the center tend to complain of pain in areas such as pronator teres, flexor carpi radialis and palmaris longus, while high proportion of them feel pain in pronator teres area.

In more detail, there are many problems caused by golf, but they can be classified into four major categories.

The first is back pain. Since golf is a repetitive body rotation movement, incorrect movements can cause back pain. The second is the right arm medial epicondylitis (also known as golf elbow) and the left arm lateral epicondylitis (called tennis elbow). Repeated hitting of the ball with excessive force on the arm causes pain in this area. The third is a rotator cuff inflammation that causes shoulder pain. Excessive use of an unprepared shoulder can cause pain.

The last is pain in the upper thoracic vertebrae. Swing in a stiff, inflexible state can cause pain due to excessive rotational force on the upper thoracic vertebrae. If this pain is caused, I urge you to stop playing golf and focus on rehab.

Q. What exercise can help golders?

A. I would like to say to golf lovers that regardless of what sports they are learning, it can always be poison to anyone without medical knowledge. If the level of each shoulders is different, we should identify the reasons accurately, and how compensatory reaction occurred due to which mechanism. Of course, an expert familiar with the appropriate rehabilitation methods should help you to cure the symptom.

Or, even without pain, you should try to find hidden body imbalances and improve them before they start to cause real problems. Before playing golf, you need to warm up your entire body's muscles and prepare yourself for golf swings so that you don't apply to much force on your swing.

After playing golf, you need to relax your overactive muscles and relieve your body of pressure. Through this process, I hope a healthy atmosphere where exercise help, not hinders, one’s health is created.

Let me make it easier for the subscribers of ‘Kunkang digest’ to understand. Try locking your fingers together. Is your right thumb on the top? Now try locking your fingers in an opposite direction. The opposite direction may be awkward a bit.

We’re all used to a posture that we find comfortable due to repeated habits, even if its a wrong posture. It is recommended to practice for at least six months to correct a familiar imbalance. Especially, if we are going to have a healthy golf life, we need to practice swinging for 20 to 30 minutes every day so that our bodies will not be over-burdened from spinning.

When you hit a ball with a body unfamiliar with rotational motion, it can cause unwanted muscles to apply force, which can gradually become stiff and cause a lot of pain. Keeping up with pain and exercising can be a way to ruin your body.

The most important thing is to ask yourself ‘how am I going to spin well?’ Rather than practicing your swing on your own, I hope you will learn rotation exercise suited for golf and balanced exercises without any compensatory reaction from a well trained professional and life a healthy life.
