[NewsFlix] Seojung Art Center has been running a special exhibition Osaeckdongsim in Ulsan gallery of Seojung Art Center from January 20 of 2021. The exhibition Osaeckdongsim, the first project in 2021, is organized for visitors to appreciate the master pieces of the great Korean modern artists Kim Whan-ki, Park Rehyun, Park Saeng-kwang, and Lee Ufan, and Lee Choun-hwan, a contemporary artist who continues the lineage of Korean abstract art.
This exhibition features a variety of techniques, from Dansaekjo, Korean monotone painting, reflecting the trend of Korean art in 1970s, to traditional Korean color painting known as Jinchaehwa, and ink paintings using only shades of black.
Lee Dae-hee, CEO of Seojung Art Center, said, “This exhibition will be an opportunity for visitors to trace to the foundation of modern and contemporary art as exploring works of Korean master artists and figuring out characteristics of traditional paintings.
One of remarkable works is Untitled(1958) by Kim Whan-ki, a pioneer of abstract painting in Korea. Untitle characterized by Kim Whan-ki's unique nostalgic color is one of Kim Whan-ki's paintings of traditional Korean objects before turning into complete abstract painting.
Lee Ufan's Dialogue(2008) and From the point(1978), who contributed to the creation of Korean modernism with minimal brushstrokes such as dot and line, are also presented as main piece of the exhibition.
Artworks of Park Rehyun(1920-1976), a representative female figure of Korean modern art, are displayed at the exhibition. Phenomenon(1970-73) stands out with elaborate descriptions and delicate brush strokes.
Park Saeng-kwang, who is titled masters of Jinchaehwa, Shamanism(1980) and the Sunrise of Tohamsan Mountain(1979) are works that combine folk paintings and shamanistic paintings in his own creative style.
Lee Choun-hwan depicted natural scenery, The Sound of Nature(2005) using only shades of black ink. Even though he is currently concentrating on abstract paintings Light + Grain series, the black ink paintings like early work Light+Grain(1989) show his journey from a representational art to abstract art.
The exhibition Osaeckdongsim meaning 5 artists impress people with their own creativities, is intended to show how Korean master painters continue Korean tradition in various and unique styles and techniques.
Seojung Art Center, of which main building is located in Sangam-dong, Seoul, is currently holding Exhibition of Artist Kim Yong-won, who is one of finalists in Seojung Art Center contest in 2020. Furthermore, Seojung Art Center not only hosts master’s artworks but also discovers and supports emerging Korean artists through promoting exhibitions such as Take a breath, an exhibition project of young artists, which is collaborated with BC Card company and held in October of 2020 at Eulji Twin Tower.
